The Ministry of University and Research has published the first guidelines for the Italian Hydrogen Research.
The project, renamed "Italian Hydrogen Research Strategy"(SIRI), covers topics such as the production and use of hydrogen as an energy resource for the next decade and the role of Italy in the European Green Deal and the Horizon Europe framework programme for research and innovation.

The main issue that recurs in the document is the hydrogen supply chain. In particular, the creation of an integrated strategic programme on hydrogen supply chain is indicated as a necessary condition to bridge the current gap between Italian and European research. Therefore, first of all, it will be necessary to invest in research and development.

But not only: a plan for hydrogen in Italy must also consider transition aspects together with a longer term perspective that includes aspects related to the production, storage/transportation and use of green (or CO2-free) H2, to contribute significantly to the decarbonisation process.

In addition to the advancement of knowledge and technologies, the document specifies the end uses of this energy vector and the possible applications in industry and construction, sustainable mobility, optimal exploitation of renewables. Among these, industrial applications are considered a priority, for the introduction of hydrogen, especially green, in the "commodities" market.

During the hearing in the Environment Committee of the Senate on November 10, 2020, the Minister of Economic Development Stefano Patuanelli clarified that only hydrogen produced from renewable sources, the so-called green hydrogen, will be incentivized (unlike blue hydrogen obtained from CO2 capture and storage). The minister said that in a time frame of 3-5 years it will be possible to reach a production value of green hydrogen absolutely competitive "and therefore today we must invest on that and create the industrial assets, because one must be in Italy".
